Watercolor Skies and Clouds I

Please do not enroll in this course if you are unwilling or unable to stretch your paper. Projects 1 and 2 of my online Skies & Clouds course were developed as course supplements for this course. You may do the sample projects from the online videos or I will assist you with designing your own project using the same set of skills. Suitable for anyone who would like to pursue that material with assistance, or who had difficulty learning the material from the supplemental course materials alone. This course is most suitable for those who have completed a beginner course similar to Watercolor Jumpstart. Because of the time required for layers in larger paintings to dry, you will want to schedule at least 3-6 hours each week outside of class meetings to continue work on your projects. Experience level: This course is most suitable for those who have at least completed a beginner course similar to Watercolor Jumpstart.

The techniques in this course are intended for for skies in larger paintings. Projects should be done at quarter-sheet size (11×15″) or larger. If you prefer to work smaller or on unstretched paper, please consider the Small Skies Clinics instead.

This is it!—the course that spawned Project 1 and 2 of my online Watercolor Skies and Clouds workshop. It was originally taught as a weekend workshop, but that just seems like too much “Zooming” all at once, so I’ve taken the same 12 hours of class time and spread them out in 3-hour weekly sessions over 4 weeks. (This is probably a better way to do it, anyway, too we don’t have to give our blow dryers such a workout!)

You may work through the example projects or I will assist you with planning projects of your own that rely upon the same skills. Because these techniques require time for successive washes to dry, this is a great opportunity to work on several paintings at the same time and create series!

This interactive course is for those who would like help and coaching while through this challenging material and adapting it to paintings of your own design. (Of course, the free materials remain available for self-study if the timing of the course doesn’t work for you, or you can’t afford it at this time.)

Does not require Small Skies Clinic I as a prerequisite. Does not cover illuminated clouds against complementary or darker sky colors, such as orange clouds on a turquoise sky (covered in Small Skies Clinic III) or light effects such as rays of light or sunrise/sunset scenes with the sun (or bright sunlight) visible between clouds (covered in Small Skies Clinic IV).

Small Group Coaching

Small Group Coaching

$25 per session, ongoing, see registration page for available times

Coaching in a group setting. Assistance with planning or evaluating work in progress. Help with technical problems (watercolor or acrylic) or questions/problems with self-study tutorials. Assistance developing more creative and personal work. Class starts at scheduled time and runs for 30 minutes per person enrolled (e.g. if there are 3 enrolled, we will meet for 90 minutes; if 4 are enrolled, we will meet for 2 hours, etc.). Each student receives 30 min focus on their work and questions, but you learn from everyone’s questions and topics. An economical way to get the benefit of targeted individual coaching while also learning from the questions of others in the group. Limit of 6 students per session.
